The following is from Governor O'Malley in reference to record crime reductions:

This week, I joined law enforcement officers, community advocates and others for an exciting announcement. Thanks to the dedicated professionals in law enforcement and the partnerships we've formed with our local agencies and across our borders, we've driven violent crime down to its lowest rate in recorded history. Not since 1975, when officials began modern crime tracking in Maryland, has the rate of violent crime been this low.

By focusing on what works – improving compliance in our parole and probation system, focusing on the most violent offenders, reducing illegal gun trafficking, increasing warrant service, and applying the most effective law enforcement technology and information sharing strategies – we're making our neighborhoods safer.

Criminals no longer have the refuge of simply crossing the border into DC or Virginia. Our regional partnerships are shutting down the ability for those on probation to take advantage of the historic lack of communication across borders. And our regional warrant task force brings together law enforcement from throughout the area to act promptly when the terms of probation are violated even once.

Thanks to the hard work of law enforcement officers on the ground, we can all now see the day when our State becomes one of the safest in America. And therefore, our work continues to move Maryland forward, making our streets and neighborhoods safer, stronger, and more secure.

Martin O'Malley
Governor

It is with great sorrow that we must inform you of the death of Brother Mark Gamble. Despite recent promising signs that he would recover, in the early morning hours of Friday, April 23, 2010, Mark succumbed to injuries sustained in a motor vehicle collision on Sunday, April 18, 2010.

Mark had a great impact on the lives of many of us during his nearly 17 year career on the Prince George's County Police Department. He was a dedicated leader to his squad, a willing servant to the citizens of Prince George's County, and a eager participant in charitable endeavors like the Police Unity Tour. However, most importantly, Mark was husband, a father of three and friend to many.

We will advise all on arrangements once they become available. For now, we ask that you keep Mark's family, friends and each other in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

NO FURLOUGHS FOR FY 2011

This morning the County Executive held a briefing with all of the labor groups to provide an update on the FY2011 Proposed Budget. At the close of this year’s legislative session in Annapolis, the County was able to minimize a large portion of the cuts that the State had initially intended on implementing. As a result, the County Executive announced that there would be “NO FY2011 Furloughs or RIFs for County Employees.” During this meeting, the County Executive also expressed his desire to try and finalize all of the outstanding collective bargaining agreements as soon as possible. We look forward to continuing these negotiations with the County and coming to an acceptable resolution for this membership. We will keep everyone apprised as things continue to develop.
