The Prince George’s County Department of Permitting, Inspections and Enforcement (DPIE) is currently seeking qualified applicants to fill current and anticipated vacant Construction Standards Inspector I/II positions, grade A16/18 in the Division of Inspections.

These are entry level to full performance construction inspection positions in either site development, residential building, light commercial construction, commercial electrical or commercial building construction inspection work enforcing County, State and National safety and environmental codes, standards or specifications governing permits issued for buildings, structures, right-of-ways, building systems and site development.

Incumbents in this position perform routine and less complex assignments in accordance with departmental rules, regulations and policies.  Work is performed indoors and outdoors and may involve exposure to varying weather conditions and temperatures and may include physical activities such as repeated bending, climbing, kneeling, reaching and lifting up to thirty (30) pounds

All DPIE employees are considered critical and essential and are required to participate in the Department’s Snow and Ice Control Program, during natural or man made disasters and during other special operations as assigned. Essential employees are expected to report to work or remain at work when others are granted Administrative Leave. .


Incumbents inspect all phases of assigned construction from  erosion control/grading to final building commissioning, to ensure compliance with County, State and Federal codes, specifications, standards, approved plans and applicable ordinances; investigate matters of non-compliance, issue notices of  violation as necessary and take enforcement actions; conduct final inspection of construction work performed under permit, including all phases of construction prior to acceptance; perform mathematical computations associated with material quantities, cost estimates, etc.; prepare and submit daily, weekly and monthly reports on construction activities and inspections; prepare and review cost estimates to determine performance bond requirements; observe/conduct material testing and third party inspection; inspect assigned systems, as a Site Development/Road Inspector – sediment control devices, Storm Water Management (SWM) facilities, drainage conveyance systems, and site grading for all associated areas; as a Building Inspector – footings, foundations, frame structures, mechanical, electrical and fire/life safety systems; as a Commercial Electrical Inspector –  generators, alternate power systems, high voltage systems, low voltage and industrial systems; as a Commercial Building Inspector – works closely with professionals and third party inspection team members to evaluate compliance on complex and unusual construction projects; prepare and submit inspection documentation in compliance with County and State regulations; serve as a liaison with other agencies, consultants, contractors, utility companies, the general public and participates in emergency operations as required.


Applicants must possess a High School diploma or G.E.D., plus at least one (1) year of technical experience performing construction inspection and code enforcement work on construction projects. Applicants must submit detailed information regarding their education and experience that demonstrates the ability to: 1) read and interpret engineering plans; 2) analyze all phases of construction for compliance with applicable codes, standards and specifications; 3) prepare and maintain inspection reports, and; 4) effectively communicate with internal and external customers. An equivalent combination of relevant education and experience of the type required of this position will be considered. Each applicant must include information that clearly and convincingly demonstrates the above qualifications for this position.

2. Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and provide proof at the time of the interview.
3. Must have a satisfactory driving record and provide a current certified copy of their driving record from the Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA) at the time of the interview.
4. Must pass a pre-employment physical examination and drug/alcohol screening.
5. Possess safety shoes that meet departmental requirements.
6. Be able to work in  indoors and outdoors; exposed to varying weather conditions and temperatures, as well as, various conditions at work site inspections.

DURATION OF ELIGIBILITY:  This announcement will establish a temporary eligibility register which will become effective approximately four (4) weeks after the closing date.  Duration of eligibility will be six (6) months from notification of rating.
